Parenting Class

Divorcing and Separating Parents’ Class with Mediation Education Class

(Includes Mediation Education Class)

  1. Who is required to attend: You are required to attend this class if you have one or more minor children (under 18) involved in your legal case.  You can attend the class separately.
  2. What: This class will inform you about a) the needs of children of separated parents at different ages; b) parenting skills for divorced or separated parents; c) the financial responsibilities of parents following divorce; and d) will help you prepare for mediation.
  3. Time: This is a 4 1/2 hour class.
  4. When: You are required to attend this class within 45 days of the date the petition was filed. This class is held various times including Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
  5. Where: Anamosa, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, North Liberty, Tama, Vinton, Williamsburg:  You only attend ONE class.  See the Class Locations and Schedule below. The Divorcing and Separating Parents’ Class and the Mediation Education Class are held in one session, for your convenience.
  6. Cost: $60 per person, payment is due just before the class starts.  One fee covers both classes.  Plan to arrive 10 minutes early so you can pay before the class starts.
  7. How to Register: Look at the schedule below and decide which time and location works best for  you.  To register: Call the number listed underneath the day of the class.  Leave a voice message  with the information they ask for.  The agency will NOT call you back to confirm.
     

The class has two purposes.

  • The class tells you about children and divorce and about children’s needs at different ages, to help you make decisions in your children’s best interest.
  • The class explains mediation.

Financial Aid

If you need financial aid for these classes, please call the presenting organization before attending the class.  Leave your name and number and ask them to call you back with information about how to apply for financial aid.

Class for Minor Children in Linn County

All of the children ofa marriage/relationship who are between the ages of 6 years and 16 years shall attend a three-hour educational workshop presented by the Kids First Law Center.  The parents shall call the Kids First Law Center at (319) 365-5437 within two weeks of the date of this Order to schedule this class.  Attendance at this class shall be completed within 45 days of the date of this Order.

Class for Minor Children in Johnson County

All of the children ages 6 through 16 of your marriage/relationship are required to attend a 2.5 hour educational [Kids First Divorce workshop] presented by United Action for Youth(UAY).  The parents should call Jan Liggett at United Action for Youth (UAY) at (319) 338-7518 within two weeks of the date of the Court’s order to register any child(ren) for this class.  Attendance at this class is to be completed within 60 days of the Court’s order.
