High-conflict disputes are increasing in every setting: at the workplace, between neighbors, among family members, in legal disputes, against employers, against government agencies, in churches, healthcare organizations, schools and higher education, non-profit organizations, volunteer groups and between strangers. They often involve one or more people with high-conflict behavior, characterized by:
- All-or-nothing thinking
- Unmanaged emotions
- Extreme behavior
- Preoccupation with blaming others
- Prolonged, unresolved conflict
- Drawing in many other people
- Draining energy, time and resources
Yet these disputes can generally be managed by understanding high-conflict behavior and using skills to manage the dispute that are often different from ordinary conflict resolution methods.
This one-day training will focus on understanding and practicing conflict management skills that are not obvious and natural. Approximately half of the time will be spent on theory and the other half on practice exercises and discussion – because it takes practice to absorb these high-conflict skills. Participants will gain skills and confidence to assist them in handling any high-conflict situation, whether in a formal or informal dispute resolution setting.
Those who will benefit from this training include: mediators, human resource managers, administrators, social workers, therapists, clergy, law enforcement, healthcare professionals, educators, and any other professional who is responsible for working with high-conflict people or situations.
